One of the most important things you can do to ensure the success of your art business is to delegate tasks and seek help when needed. Trying to do everything yourself can lead to burnout and ultimately, a failed business.

When delegating tasks, it’s important to give clear instructions and deadlines, and then trust that the person you’ve delegated to will complete the task to your standards. It can be difficult to let go of control, but if you want your business to grow, you may need to delegate.

It’s also important to seek help when needed, whether that’s hiring an accountant to help with your finances, or asking a friend for advice on social media marketing. No one knows everything, and there’s no shame in admitting that you need help. By delegating tasks and seeking help when needed, you’re setting your art business up for success.

Also consider using automation tools or systems that can help you to more efficiently perform repetitive tasks.

Stay motivated

As an artist, it can be easy to get caught up in the day-to-day and lose sight of your long-term goals. Here are a few tips to help you stay motivated and on track to achieving your art business goals:

  1. Set realistic goals. It’s important to set goals that are achievable. If your goal is to sell 100 paintings in a year, but you only sell an average of one painting per month, that goal is going to be very difficult, if not impossible, to achieve. On the other hand, if you set a goal of selling one painting per week, that’s a much more achievable goal.
  2. Create a plan. Once you have your goals set, it’s time to create a plan of action. This plan should include things like what type of artwork you’re going to create, how you’re going to market and sell your artwork, and how you’re going to keep track of your progress. Having a plan will help to keep you organized and on track.
  3. Take action. No matter how good your goals and plans are, they won’t do any good if you don’t take action. Make a commitment to yourself to work on your art business every day, even if it’s just for a few minutes. The more action you take, the closer you’ll get to achieving your goals.
  4. Get help. If you’re feeling stuck or like you’re not making progress, reach out for help. There are a number of resources available, whether it’s hiring a business coach or taking an art business course. Getting help from someone who knows what they’re doing can make a huge difference.
  5. Stay positive. It’s easy to get discouraged, especially when you’re not seeing the results you want. But it’s important to stay positive and believe in yourself. Remember, it takes time and consistent effort to build a successful art business. Stay focused on your goals and don’t give up.
  6. Reward yourself. As you achieve your goals, be sure to celebrate your successes. This will help to keep you motivated and focused. Give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Celebrate milestones

You’ve set your sights on some lofty art business goals and you’re ready to achieve them. But how do you keep motivated throughout the journey? How do you ensure that you don’t get bogged down in the day-to-day and lose sight of the bigger picture?

One way to stay on track is to celebrate your milestones. When you reach a goal, big or small, take some time to reflect on your accomplishment. This will not only help you maintain your momentum, but it will also give you a much-needed confidence boost. Here are a few tips for celebrating your milestones:

  1. Set aside time to reflect on your achievements. Take some time, even if it’s just 10 minutes, to really think about what you’ve accomplished. What did you have to overcome to get to this point? What did you learn along the way? How does this new accomplishment make you feel?
  2. Share your successes with others. Telling others about your accomplishments can help you to solidify them in your own mind. It can also be a great way to get some much-needed positive feedback. So, don’t be shy about sharing your news, whether it’s with your inner circle or a wider audience.
  3. Treat yourself to something special. After all your hard work, you deserve a little reward. Whether it’s a night out, some new art supplies, or simply some extra time to relax, take some time to enjoy your success.
  4. Use your achievements as motivation for the future. When you look back on your accomplishments, it can be easy to get complacent. But instead of letting your successes lull you into a false sense of security, use them as motivation to keep pushing forward. Remember, you’re capable of great things and you have what it takes to reach your goals.
  5. Keep a record of your milestones. One way to keep track of your successes is to maintain a record of them, whether it’s in a physical journal or an online document. This can be a great way to look back on your progress and see how far you’ve come.
  6. Set new goals. Once you’ve celebrated your current accomplishments, it’s time to set your sights on new goals. What do you want to achieve next? What’s your next big challenge? By continually setting and achieving goals, you’ll keep your art business journey interesting and rewarding.

With the ease of access to the internet, more and more people are turning to online platforms to showcase their work. This is especially true for artists, who can use the internet to reach a global audience.

There are a number of ways to promote your art online. In this article, we will take a look at five of the most effective methods. These include using social media, setting up a website, taking advantage of search engine optimization, experimenting with video, and using online marketplaces to sell and showcase your work.

Top 5 Tips for Promoting Your Art Online

1. Create a strong social media presence

For any business that wants to be successful online, it helps to have a strong social media presence. This is especially true for art businesses, which are usually highly visual.

There are a few key things to remember when creating a social media presence for promoting your art online. The first is to focus on quality over quantity. It’s better to have a small number of high-quality pieces than a large number of low-quality ones. One way to optimize your content is to ensure that all images and videos are given descriptive file names, titles and alt tags. This allows search engines to index the content properly and help people find it when they search for specific keywords.

Another way to optimize content is to use key phrases on your artist website that are related to the artwork you want to promote. Think descriptive phrases such as “landscape paintings” or “custom pet portraits”. By including these key phrases in titles, tags, and descriptions, artists can improve their chances of being found by potential customers who are searching for those phrases.

In addition to optimizing website content, artists can also use SEO to improve the visibility of their social media posts. By including key words and phrases in the file name, post description, and alt tags (where available) artists can make it easier for potential customers to find their work on social media sites like Instagram and Tiktok, which are moving towards more SEO based search algorithms in place of hashtags.

By using these basic SEO techniques, artists can reach a larger audience and promote their artwork more effectively.

4. Create short videos of your art

There are many ways to promote art online, but one of the most effective is through creating short videos of your art or art process. Art videos can be used to give potential buyers a tour of your studio, a closer look at your work, or even just to provide some educational information about your process or medium.

Here are five tips for creating great art videos:

  1. Keep it short and sweet. Ideally your video should be between 15 -60 seconds long, which is what most short form video apps accept. Check out my post on how to use TikTok for artists for more short video ideas. If you want to post long format videos of your art, YouTube is a better place for that.
  2. Start with a bang. The first few seconds of your video are crucial in hooking the viewer, so make sure you start with an attention-grabbing image or scene.
  3. Use professional-quality footage and audio. This doesn’t mean you need to hire a Hollywood film crew, but your video should be well-lit and have clear, high-quality audio.
  4. Edit for maximum impact. A good edit can make all the difference in a video, so don’t be afraid to cut out any sections that aren’t essential. I recommend the InShot app for editing videos on your phone.
  5. Include a call to action. At the end of your video, make sure to include a call to action, such as asking viewers to like and share your video, or visit your website to learn more about your art.

5. Sell your art online

When it comes to selling art online, there are a few different avenues that artists can take.

Here are five of the most popular methods:

  1. Set up your own online shop: One of the best ways to sell art online is to set up your own online shop on your artist website. This gives you complete control over the prices, shipping, and promotion of your work. You’ll need to invest some time and money into setting up your shop, but once it’s up and running, it can be a great way to make sales. You can use a storefront app like Shopify (paid) or Woocommerce (free) to set up your store.
  2. Use an online marketplace or Print on Demand: If you’re not ready to set up your own shop, there are plenty of online marketplaces that you can use to sell your art. These platforms make it easy to list and sell your work, and they handle all the payments and shipping for you. Some of the most popular art marketplaces include Etsy, Saatchi Art, and Fine Art America.
  3. Sell through social media: Social media is a great way to connect with potential customers and sell your art. You can use platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter to promote your work and drive traffic to your shop, or sell directly through DM (direct messaging). Just make sure you’re using high-quality images and engaging copy to grab people’s attention.
  4. Take commissions: If you’re not interested in selling your existing artwork, another option is to take commissions. This involves working directly with clients to create custom artwork to their specifications. You can find clients for commissions through social media, by posting the type of artwork you want to take commissions for, and then taking requests via DM.
  5. Participate in art fairs: Another option for selling your artwork is to participate in art fairs and other in person events. This is a more traditional approach, but it can still be effective. Art fairs can be a great way to meet potential customers and build up a rapport with them, even if they don’t buy anything. You can hand out business cards with your social media links so they can follow you, and then potentially make a purchase through your website later on.

All of these methods can be effective ways to sell your art online. Just choose the approach that makes the most sense for you and your business.

Creating and selling your own artwork has never been easier. There are multiple selling platforms, a range of products to choose from and more accessible mediums than ever before. So, whether you’re a traditional artist or a digital whizz, we’re going to explore a few ways you can get in on the trend.

From Art Fairs to NFTs, read on to find out how to get involved and be inspired to create and sell your artwork…

Selling your artwork: Traditional art 

Back in the day, artists often had to create their own paint, stretch their canvases, and have models standing by for days. Thankfully, those things are in the past, and a variety of traditional mediums are widely available at good art supply stores.

We all have our favourites – some prefer sculpting, others love gentle watercolours, but there are markets and audiences for all. If you’re unsure which medium would be best for sellable art, look at the places you could sell it and work out what sells best. Check places like:

  • Etsy
  • Local craft fairs
  • Local galleries
  • Any local pop-up shops
  • Any shops that sell on consignment
  • Your local government website for street-selling rules

Traditional artwork is often regarded as top-tier with the time, effort and quality often considered in the price, so it’s less likely to be found online outside of sites like Etsy and your website if you have one. 

The marketing and selling process is simple as there are limited places to sell actual physical artwork, and most people like to see pieces upfront before confirming a sale. It’s just a case of displaying your art and enticing a buyer with a one-of-a-kind piece via word of mouth, social posts, and blogs on your website if you have one. It is a more challenging market but does carry a premium price.

Sculpture and moulded artworks like acrylic placemats, decorative cups, figurines, and decorative trays are still technically traditional art, but they are significantly easier to mass-produce and keep consistent. Card-making is similar to these, especially if you use stamps or Cricut machines alongside the huge range of card-making materials available in the market. The material accessibility and easy processing make these an ideal option for someone looking to be creative and more time or cost efficient overall. Unfortunately, this also means the market is a bit saturated with similar products, so make sure you find your niche and stand out from the crowd.

Selling your artwork: Digital Art 

With the recent advances in technology, it’s no surprise that art has turned more and more digital in recent years. It offers significant efficiencies such as less clear-up, more mobility, and you can replicate a variety of techniques on screen. The most recent artwork craze is NFT and AI art.

  • What is NFT art?

NFT art is what’s called a Non-Fungible Token. The idea is that it’s a unique piece of digital art that’s rooted in cryptocurrency – sort of like trading cards, but digital. The difference is that when you buy an NFT, you own the copyright, and there shouldn’t be duplicates anywhere, though there have been high-profile cases of NFT theft.

They can be GIFs or jpegs, even videos, and you can sell them on dedicated NFT marketplaces like Rarible, OpenSea and SuperRare.

  • What is AI art?

AI art is another new market contender. It’s created using purpose-made apps like Dall-E and starryai that are coded to use algorithms to interpret your prompts and create art based on them. These are typically weird and funny pieces of digital art, but their selling ability isn’t very high, though more professional AI-aided and inspired art has made money in the past. 

Other digital art options

The more common kinds of digital art are things like:

  • Logos
  • Print-on-demand ideas like t-shirts, posters and other merchandise that use dropshipping services
  • YouTube covers, thumbnails and icons
  • Fonts
  • Stationary Templates (Invites, letterheads, etc.)
  • Illustrations

These are all pieces of art you can create and sell over and over if you wanted. They’re far more time-efficient as you create them once, then you can sell them repeatedly on different marketplaces like Etsy, Redbubble, MyFonts, social media and more. Because they’re so mass-produced, the price you sell at is lower, though if you’re doing commissions, there are more earning options.

There are multiple opportunities for selling your art, both digital and traditional, it’s just up to you to find the niche and material choice that suits you best. So, do some market research, see where your skills lie and start exploring the money-making world of being a professional artist and entrepreneur.

You’ve come to the right place, because I’ve been selling my art online for over 7 years. During that time I figured out how to produce the highest quality work for my stores. I have sold thousands of products featuring my artwork through my Print on demand stores, from hand drawn line art to watercolor paintings.

For example: I created a t-shirt from my drawing of a ladybug from the Mandalatober challenge (an art challenge I participated in on Instagram.)

This technique will work on your hand drawn line art, doodles and illustrations, or even paintings, as long as they are small enough to fit in your scanner bed.

In this tutorial I will take you through the following steps:

  • Scanning your art into Photoshop.
  • Doing some preliminary clean up of the artwork in Photoshop.
  • Cleaning up the artwork and smoothing out lines in Illustrator, using the Image Trace tool.
  • More Photoshop tricks for prepping the artwork to upload to the Print on Demand sites.
  • Required file types you need for the Print on Demand sites.
  • Several tips and tricks along the way.

I created this video to take you through the process of digitizing my own hand drawn artwork, using a combination of Photoshop and Illustrator. I figured this would be the easiest way to demonstrate this process, rather than trying to describe it to you.
