What is a Mandala and How to Draw One

what is a mandala and how to draw one

What is a mandala?

The word mandala literally means “circle” in Sanskrit, but they are so much more than that. Mandalas are beautiful geometric images that represent the circle of life, the universe, divine power, synchronicity and more.

Evidence of mandalas date back to the first century B.C. However, they are likely much older than that. Mandalas have been found all over the world, from India to South America. They are a common symbol in many religions including Buddhism, Hinduism and Christianity.

Today, mandalas are used around the world as a meditative art practice. They utilize a combination of radial balance and abstract patterns to mesmerize the artist and viewer alike.

Why draw mandalas?

Drawing mandalas can be a tranquil and meditative experience. They are often used in Art Therapy as a way to disconnect from stress and anxiety. They help the artist concentrate on being present in the moment.

Drawing intricate patterns is also a great way to improve hand-eye coordination.

Drawing mandalas is easy and fun, and the end result is unique and beautiful.

How to draw a mandala

There are many different ways to draw mandalas.

You can draw them completely free hand, or use a template. You can create your own template by using a compass and a ruler, or you can download the templates I created here.

Generally when drawing a mandala you start from the center and work your way out.

Incorporate different geometric patterns into your mandala as it expands outwards.

You can use many different materials to create mandalas. Pen and paper is the most obvious. However, people create mandalas from sand, rocks, leafs, crochet, yarn, and many other materials.

It’s a good idea to keep a sketchbook or even a Pinterest Board with different patterns to refer back to for future mandala drawings.

Mandala PopSockets on Amazon!

popsockets iphone huawei samsung phone stand grip holder

I’m excited to announce that I’m finally selling PopSockets on Amazon with my mandala designs on them!

They are currently only available to U.S. residents only, but hopefully will expand to the UK, Germany, and Canada soon.

Please note that if you’re not located in the U.S. you may not be able to see the Popsockets.  However, if you go to the top left of the screen (on Amazon) where it says “Deliver To” you can click on that and manually type in a U.S. zipcode (ex. 90210) and then you can see the item.

Unfortunately you won’t be able to ship to an address outside of the U.S. at this time.

So, what the heck are PopSockets anyway?

They are collapsible grips that stick to the back of your phone (or case) and can be used to hold your phone (great for photos and selfies), or as a stand so you can watch movies or otherwise go hands free!

I love using PopSockets on my phone and can’t live without them now, so be warned!

Here are a few examples of my mandala designs on PopSockets, and you can see all my current designs here.

They make great gifts and stocking stuffers too!

Zentangle Inspired Drawings

zentangle face art drawing collage magazine woman

Hi guys!  Today I am sharing with you 6 different zentangle inspired drawings I have done over the past few years.

Zentangle is basically the practice of creating art from intricate doodle-like patterns. It is said to help with anxiety and focus. The practice of Zentangle is similar to creating mandalas for therapeutic reasons.

Most of these art pieces combine elements of doodle art drawing with collage. They were all done in my sketchbook using Sharpie markers.

Several of these designs are available as prints and on other products in my Society6 store and other shops.

This one was inspired by Easter and the flowers of Spring.

It is also available as a greeting card from my Zazzle store.

For this piece, I pasted some gorgeous butterfly photographs in my sketchbook and then doodled around them.

This one combines a lot of different Zentangle inspired patterns but does not have any collage elements.  This one is not available as a print.

The next one incorporates different lips cut out of a women’s magazine, and is one of my favourites!

Another spring time inspired piece including bright flowers collaged into the design.

Society6 Product Review – Leggings

elephant tribal pattern leggings navy blue

Hey guys! I purchased a pair of leggings from Society6 a little while ago. After wearing them and washing them a few times I thought I’d write up a little review for those of you who are wondering what they’re like!

I have to say I absolutely LOVE these leggings.

They are stretchy and comfortable, and the fabric is really soft and silky to the touch.  The thick band around the top is sturdy and helps prevent muffin top, which is always good. I’m wearing a size Small in the image and usually wear small or medium in leggings, depending on the store.

The print, my White and Navy Blue Elephant Pattern, looks GORGEOUS. It actually looks a lot better and brighter in person than the preview images on their website.

See the contrast between the preview photos and the one of me wearing them?  They look so different!  The bright blue colour is actually much closer to my original image.

These leggings are great for working out and doing yoga but also just for lounging around the house and being comfortable.

Here is the product description from Society6’s website:

Nobody will judge you for wearing them all day, every day – they’re that comfy. That’s because these tights are constructed with breathable, antimicrobial polyester spandex that keeps you dry while staying cool.

  • Constructed with antimicrobial polyester spandex
  • Breathable, moisture-wicking qualities
  • Six panel cut and sew construction
  • Adjustable waistline

Check out all of the other styles of leggings in my Society6 store!

So if you’re on the fence about picking up some leggings from Society6 I say GO FOR IT!  You won’t regret it.

Have you ever bought leggings from Society6 or another POD website?  Let me know your experience in the comments below!

Complex Mandala Drawing Template

mandalas template sketchbook drawing

Hey guys! Considering the success of my Mandala Drawing Templates, I decided to create this new, more detailed version of the template so now you can draw even more complex mandala designs!

Just click on the template image below to open it up a new tab and then you can right click and choose “save image as” to download it to your computer.

complex mandala drawing template

Print the template off on an 8.5 x 11″ piece of paper and then use it as a guide underneath copy paper or even sketchbook paper to draw your mandala!

I find it works best to paperclip it on at least 2 sides to prevent it from moving around under the page while you draw.

You could also use this template as a layer in your digital painting program to help you draw digital mandalas.

Here is a mandala I drew using this template:

I hope you will find this mandala template useful!

Let me know what you think by leaving a comment below, and feel free to share your mandalas with me on Instagram by tagging me @julieerindesigns, or post a link to your drawing below!

If you’re new to drawing mandalas, or want something a little less complex, you might want to check out my other Mandala Drawing Templates here!

Have a great day everyone and have fun drawing those mandalas.

Cheers!
